AWe are looking for well defined commercial concepts, marketable good compositions with creative insight, high technical level in terms of color, definition, lighting. We encourage digital processing and creativity, as long as it gives the image more appeal, but keeping in mind the generic essence of stock imagery. This is true for the main theme of the image, too. The subject should be as generic as possible, while composition clear, without elements that can distract the viewer from the main theme.
We value intellectual creative process which makes the difference between concept and point-and-shoot.
One good way to get a better image of what's hot in stock, is to browse through our best selling images. This way you'll get a visual, thus more effective help in understanding and achieving success as a stock photographer on Dreamstime.

APhotographers can request a payment as soon as their earnings balance is higher than $100, by applying from the Management area. Payments are sent as bank checks (that you can cash at a local bank), by PayPal, Payoneer (Dreamstime Prepaid MasterCard) or MoneyBookers. The earnings value in your account will not show the requested amount, while it is pending approval.

AThere is a limit to the number of images submitted per week (the limit resets every Sunday). All users can submit via FTP: - Users with an approval percentage higher than 80% can upload the maximum amount of images per week. This applies for the first 50 submissions if you're a new photographer.
- Users with an approval percentage of between 50-80% can upload half (1/2) of the maximum amount of images per week.
- Users with an approval percentage of between 30-50% can upload the third part (1/3) of the maximum amount of images per week.
- Users with an approval percentage of between 10-30% can upload a quarter (1/4) of the maximum amount of images per week.
- Users with an approval percentage of between 0-10% can upload a sixth (1/6) of the maximum amount of images per week.
All exclusive contributors enjoy 50% extra submissions to the above given limits.
Contributors with more than 500 images online and an approval ratio higher than 85% are eligible to submit several times more than the current upload limit. Feature available only based on application/request.

AWe would like to accept as many images as possible, but we reserve the right to refuse images that don't fit our marketing strategy. Each stock agency has its own audience and strategy. We encourage photographers to enquiry about a refusal by replying to the notification email, but note that we will not take this type of statement into account.

AWe love illustrations! Vector files should be saved in raster format, JPG at a high resolution, saved at highest quality and submitted in this format. You can also upload an additional format (AI, PNG, CDR or EPS extensions accepted) after the JPG upload using the FTP upload/Additional sub-folder or as soon as the JPG is accepted. In some cases (e.g. layouts of web templates) it is advisable to upload the additional format before the review of the JPG file in order to increase chances of approval.

ADepending on the subject's potential, quality of the photos and saturation of the database for that specific subject, you can expect sales after just a few days.
Due to the fact that the buyers may find your image now but download it later, on the average the first sale occurs after one month. It happens much earlier if your portfolio is bigger and you upload more images, constantly.

AProbably they were refused and the emails didn't reach you. Ensure that your email provider or another spam filter is not blocking our emails. You can check the refusal reasons for the files you just missed, in the Refused files section, under your Management area. Note that the files are kept only for 7 days since their submissions.

AWe're always looking for more photographers and they are our community's most important asset. Here are a few basic guidelines that will help you with the submission process. Registration, membership and image upload are free of any charge. Once you have an active account, you can start uploading images. Our agency does not run an initial screening of your portfolio but make sure you are selective and upload high quality content as competition is tough. Find more info about upload steps here and here.
For large portfolios, the FTP option is recommended as you can upload your entire portfolio at once. Users exclusive with other agencies can also start uploading images offline as soon as they send their renounce exclusivity notifications. The content will be available for sale as soon as this notification expires.
Don't be discouraged by refusals. While we'd love to accept all images you send us, we need to make sure your portfolio features only content that has high sale potential. We also want to give you the opportunity of improving and evolving in order to meet the stock photo market needs and requirements.
Don't forget to check our site's Terms and conditions. More details about selling your images and royalties awarded can be found on the Sell your images page. Join conversations on the Message boards for tips and shared experiences from fellow members.

A You can disable all files approved more than six months ago at any time. You are allowed to disable 30% of files uploaded in the recent six months however 70% must be kept online for six months from their approval date. You can disable the remaining 70% after six months pass. Once the files are disabled, nobody is able to view/access them, except for you. The files will remain in our offline database for 12 months until all liabilities (refunds, potential copyright infringements, etc) concerning them are cleared off, then they are automatically deleted.
The account cannot be closed until the above requirements of the contract expire. Accounts with activity (license/download) cannot be deleted, as they can be referenced internally in regards to past licensing. However, they can be blocked from public access.
More account closure details can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

AYes, the "sell the rights" option doesn't request files to be shot specifically for the current theme. Knowing that you will relinguish all rights and stop selling the photos AFTER they are accepted by Dreamstime and the copyrights fee is awarded, you may upload images that were sold before.

ARegular Model Release documents need to be printed. Then fill the information as described below, scan it or take a photograph of it and upload it in your Model Release Library. We also accept model releases generated by applications, i.e. Easy releases. The apps that have been so far approved as compatible with our legal standards are Easy Release for iPad and Android, Model Release and ASMP Release for IOS only.
All the model releases must be filled in by you, as the photographer, your model and a witness who has to be a third person of legal age (you, the photographer or the model can't witness your own model releases). For self portraits, you are both photographer and model but you cannot be the witness. For images with your children, you are both photographer and parent/guardian but you cannot be the witness.
The following fields are mandatory for all model releases for adults:
- photographer's name, signature
- model's name, signature, complete postal address (including country), phone number
- witness' name, signature
The following fields are mandatory for all the model releases for people under 18:
- photographer's name, signature
- model's name
- tutor's (parent) name, signature, complete postal address (include country), phone number
- witness' name, signature
The model release must be filled in with roman letters and the writing must be readable. Should you upload a scanned or photographed MR, the signatures can not be digital. App generated model releases can have digital signatures.
Top ↑
-
ANo, you can ask the model to sign your own Model Release, IF it contains all required information as our own MR document and all needed legal paragraphs. The MR document can carry your company's logo, but we don't accept documents signed specifically for other agencies or that carry their logo.

ARefusals are in no way personal but mere guidelines that speak about the quality and commercial potential of the specific image on the market as it is at the time of review. As your representing agent we want to offer more of your content, but your images need to be suitable for the needs and requirements of our customers, both technically and aesthetically. We provide you with the refusal reasons in hope that with these guidelines, your future images will improve in all aspects and sell successfully.
Always read the rejection reason(s) carefully and completely. Open your refused image and check again, keeping the rejection reason in mind. This will help you see the image with a more critical eye and from a more objective standpoint. If you are able to correct the problem(s), do this as best as you can and resubmit your image. If you are not able to correct the image, take note of the error or mistake you made. Do your best to avoid repeating it in your future uploads. This is especially valid if you see a repeating refusal reason - it means that you should pay closer attention to this aspect of your images. As you avoid the mistakes you made in the past you will begin to see how your skills and ultimately the images you produce become better and better.
If you do not understand a particular refusal reason feel free to contact us and ask for a more detailed clarification. Tell us also why you believe your image is good and suitable for commercial use. This will help you look at it from our perspective.
We reserve the right to select our content and the refusals do not necessarily relate to your photographic skills and technique, they usually reflect our criteria for selecting sale-able content. While you may not always agree with our feedback, keep in mind that it is meant to maximize your approval ratio and the sale potential of your images on our website. Good luck!

AThe files waiting to be reviewed are listed under the "Pending files" section within your management area. You can edit or delete your pending images, as long as they are not being reviewed by admin. Once they are allocated to admin for review, the edit buttons will not be available.

ANo, this is not true. One of the main advantages of stock photography is that your royalties will keep on coming over a long time interval. It is nevertheless true that if you keep uploading, the sales increase much faster. Their amount can double or triple over the next month, if you upload constantly. After uploading a large batch of images a significant number of sales may appear after one month or sooner. Once you stop uploading, the sales do not grow as fast as before, still they will not collapse.
These are conclusions based on statistics, your mileage may vary. Uploading good photos constantly and constantly improving quality as well as aggressive selectivity of your own portfolio are the most important "secrets" of success in stock photography.

AThe model release document is a legal document required for each image containing identifiable persons or for persons who are a main subject of a photo. This document is confidential and it is only seen by Dreamstime's editors who will check its correctness. You can download a model release document here: http://www.dreamstime.com/stockutilities . Download the model release depending on your needs: the shooting session includes an adult and/or a minor.
If you intend to shoot an image for the current assignment and sell the rights to Dreamstime for it, then download the exclusive model release.

AOnce the files are successfully uploaded, the system automatically transfers them into your Unfinished Files area. Once they are transferred the system also deletes them from your FTP account, so you don't have to bother with them once they are uploaded. You can see if the upload was successful in your Upload History page.

AUnder some circumstances images that can't be sold commercially (i.e. include visible logos) can be accepted under the editorial license (still RF, but with a more restrictive usage). The editors may consider that the image cannot be adjusted (i.e. remove logos) in order to make it acceptable under the RF license, but that the image has market potential. In this case they will accept it under the editorial license. This procedure avoids a second resubmission as well as affecting the contributor's approval ratio.

If you have not received any message, please check your bulk area of the mail box. Please make sure that your spam filters do not block the access for Dreamstime mails.
You can also try locating your images from the Management Area - Online Files or Refused Files. If you still have not found them, please write support making sure to specify the image ID.

ADepending on server load it might take up to a few hours for the files to reach your Unfinished Files area. Don't rush to re-upload your files if you don't see instant results, this will generate duplicate files on the server.
If you still don't see your images in your account after more than 24 hours, something must have gone wrong, you can try re-uploading them. Note that images less than 3MP, not JPG or not RGB are automatically deleted without a notification.

AFirst, you will have to upload the MR document to the MR library section. Once the upload is completed, you can use the same document for all images that include the model. You don't have to upload the MR document each time you upload a different photo of your model.
After the MR document was uploaded in the MR library and all required information is provided, you can attach the document on the second page of your upload.
If your image contains several models, you can attach multiple MR documents by holding down your CTRL key while selecting the desired documents.

AYou could... But we really wouldn't recommend it. IE has the bad habbit of not disconnecting from server once you are done, so this might limit your access if you try to connect after.
You could use FileZilla, a free and easy to use client. Or, if you are using Firefox for your Internet experience, there's this nice extension called FireFTP, which will open an FTP client in a tab.

AYou upload the image as a regular submission and specify in the notify admin area the ID of the photo you wish to replace as well as the improvements made. AThe selling price for SR-EL is decided by the contributor. Our agency has a recommended price list to be used as guideline but the final decision on the price remains to the photographers entirely.
Contributors are recommended not to set very high prices as buyers may select more affordable files. Setting a very low price is also not advisable as this is a one-time sale. The file cannot be licensed/sold/displayed again and it must be disabled from all other websites, agencies etc. Penalties for infringements on the SR-EL contract are extremely severe.
Top ↑
-
AIn order for you not to get the error message again, you need to check that your images are at least 3MP. Make sure that you do not confuse MP (which stands for photo dimension) with MB (which stands for file size on your disk). In order to get the MP you have to multiply the length and the width (measured in pixels) of your image and divide the result by 1,000,000. For instance, if an image is 3,000 pixels length and 2,000 pixels width then the image will have 6,000,000 pixels (6MP).

ARoyalties different from the ones you see displayed on the Sell Your Images page are due to various factors.
The most common explanation is the actual credit value per each package a buyer purchases. The more credits the package has, the lower the price/credit. Each credit's value and hence royalties are now calculated at the real value paid by the buyer.
For example, 8 credits purchased with the $9.99 package, will bring the contributor a reference of $1.25/credit: the royalties for a 8 credits image will vary between $3 (non exclusives, level 1) or $6 for exclusives. A $99.99 credit-package will bring the buyer 108 credits, which translates into $0.93/credit. Royalties for a 8 credits image are $2.23 (non exclusives, level 1) and $4.46 for exclusives. Add to the above the possibility of having third party downloads through our alliances or the value of withholding taxes for non-US contributors and you will understand why royalties values are so diverse. The price per credit PPC can also be affected by seasonal promotions and discount campaigns.
Top ↑
-
AYes, you can, although the bonus will not be automatically added by the system, email support after you make the conversion and we will add the bonus. If the amount you already converted equals the price of a package we will award the same bonus.

AThe additional format is a file that doubles the price of the maximum raster (JPG) file for that file. Photographers can upload RAW files in the following formats: arw, pmp, srf - Sony ; crw, cr2 - Canon; cmt - Chinon; dcr - Kodak; dng - Digital Negative Format; j6i - Ricoh; mos - Leaf Valeo; mrw - Minolta; nef - Nikon; orf - Olympus; pef - Pentax; raf - Fuji; x3f - Sigma; rw2 - Panasonic Lumix.
Illustrators can upload vectors as cdr- Corel Draw, ai - Adobe Illustrator, eps - Encapsulated Postscript, png - Portable Network Graphics.

AAfter you submit your files, they reach a pending line from where they will be reviewed in a chronological order. A few days are usually required. You are provided with an ETR (Estimated Time until Review) for each file however, please keep in mind that the ETR is an approximation and it can vary according to numerous factors: week-end days, total pending files, number of total submissions. Feel free to submit more images while the first submissions wait their review.

You need to have at least 50 images online in order to be accepted as an exclusive photographers. Exclusivity rights can be requested from your Management Area/Online Files.

AIf the imported model release is associated with a single model then click edit and complete the required fields.
If the imported model release is for a group of models (JPG images stitched together in a single file) then you will need to upload a new MR document for each person included. Contact support to have your image associated with the appropriate model releases. Include the name of the model releases existent in your MR library for each of the people in the photograph.

AIf you receive such email, it means that a refund was performed for the purchase of one of your images. The message explains why and for which image the refund was performed. AFlags/reports for bad keywords are reviewed by admin and approved or refused accordingly. Each time one of your images is flagged for irrelevant keywords, you will receive a comment. Please read it and compare reported keywords to the content of your image. Note that sometimes buyers will accidentally use the flag button instead of "Add to lightbox". If the keyword is striking relevant, most likely the flag was accidental and of course, it will not be approved. You can reply to mention that the user accidentally clicked the flag instead of saving the image.
Since it may take weeks for the flag to be reviewed, while the report is still pending, you can edit your image info (Image page/ Tools tab) and remove all irrelevant keywords. If, at the time of review, the image is edited and irrelevancies are removed, the flag will no longer reach us.
On the contrary case, if at review time the image info still includes the keywords reported, editing rights are blocked and the person who reports bad info receives $0.02.
In order to avoid future reports, we strongly recommend you check thoroughly and adjust all image info.
Top ↑
-
AAdditional format files, as well as Model Release documents, can be uploaded through FTP. Access the FTP folder using your preferred FTP client and see the two appropriate sub-folders. Uploads in these sub-folders will be automatically imported as MRs and Additional formats respectively.
For additional formats, the name of the file must be the image ID number along with the extension. e.g.: 123456.eps for image ID 123456.
Top ↑
-
ABuyers may navigate several pages before buying an image so you may sometimes see that the "buyer searched for" section lists keywords which are not included in your info, may be unusual or completely unrelated to your image. You could use these keywords to identify the concept as in some cases unrelated keywords can reveal more about the buyers' project.
Although they start from a search based on keywords, the buyers may then navigate the "similar images" or the "more images with this model" sections. A search for "smiling woman" can continue in the "images with the same model" section from where the buyer can move to a different expression and end up downloading an "upset man". If the keywords are never changed while navigating these pages, then the initial "smiling woman" set is saved and shown as used by the buyer.
The "buyer searched for" feature is designed to help you better understand how searches are made and which of your keywords are most relevant sale-wise speaking. You can use it as guideline and edit the image info to include relevant or obvious keywords you may have missed. We do ask you to keep in mind the visual search explanation above and NOT include unrelated or irrelevant terms. Spam is not allowed so make sure all keywords apply to your image. If a buyer downloads your "dog looking up" but initially searched for "business man looking up," the only keywords you can add to your image are "looking" and "up" in case they are missing.
Top ↑
-
AIf your image was recently approved, please keep in mind that it takes a few days for the system to update and index the image properly so that it appears in all areas of the site. Throughout these days the keywords do not function in searches. In the meantime you can find your image if you search by ID number or on your profile page. You will be able to find it in searches in around 5 days.

AOur review team includes full time in-house reviewers and remote reviewers whom we usually recruit from among our community. Any contributor can be invited to join the remote team. Eligibility criteria for remote editors generally relate to:
- your activity as contributor (portfolio quality and diversity, high Approval Ratio, submission constancy and consistency).
- your overall conduct as community member (helpful, useful forum and blog posts).
- ability to demonstrate solid knowledge of the site functions, features and policies.
- exclusivity with our agency always constitutes a plus.
We are always looking for committed contributors who demonstrate and profess the above mentioned over a long period of time.
Note: Our recruitment process is not based solely on these criteria and they are offered for general guidance. Meeting these criteria does not represent a guarantee of selection.

Please do not resubmit the image without correcting the issues reported in the refusal e-mail. Also, note that by using the resubmission ID, you will assign the same license (editorial or RF) selected upon your first submission.

AThe geo-tagging feature is to be used for any files whose location is to be considered relevant. We recommend you add the location mostly to outdoor images that have public interest. For images shot in indoor locations, please use the geo-tagging only for locations that are of cultural, archeological, historical, social, touristic interest, e.g. museums, churches, stations, airports, landmark buildings. Please do not geo-tag images shot in studios or any concepts that are not related to the location. We also advise you to ensure that the confidentiality of private
establishment locations is observed should the owners desire so.

AStep 1: Upload the images using the regular upload or the FTP upload options (Management Area). The FTP upload mode needs to be activated while the regular upload requires Java installed/updated. Wait a couple of hours for images to be processed.
Step 2: Check if the images have been correctly processed in your Upload History/Management area
Step 3: Continue the submission procedure from your Unfinished Files/Management Area. Three submission tabs are available: 'RF commercial', (images for commercial license sale, you fill in your own image info, in English only) 'RF no keywords', (images for commercial license sale, image info is filled in by our keymasters, $0.60/image) 'Editorial' (images for editorial license sale). Mouse over each tab to see detailed explanations. Select one of these three tabs and proceed.
Step 4: Complete submission and send the image to review using the 'Submit' button. The images go to your Pending files folder where they sit until review and you will be notified by email if images are approved or refused.

AWe usually require and keep on-file only one model release for each of your models, regardless of the number of shooting sessions uploaded. Even if you have more MR documents offline, you only need to upload one per model. You do need to add new model releases once your models move to different age groups. Our advanced search engine includes an age parameter so if your model moves for instance from the 21-30 yrs old category to the 31-45 yrs old category, a new model release for the same person must be added and used accordingly. This way, the age relevancy is kept in searches and your images get accurate exposure.
